Hibiscus

Hibiscus or “gumamela” as we call it is the favorite flower in the Philippines even in Okinawa and Hawaii. They are used extensively in landscaping. They are easy to grow and the flower colors are so varied, if you’re a collector, you will have fun. The petals of the flowers have also several types, single or double, plain or ruffled. The only thing is the flower lasts only for a day so enjoy it while you can.
Hibiscus belongs to the Mallow family of plants and so is the okra. You will notice the okra flowers look like hibiscus flowers. They both have same slimy qualities in them.
The gumamela flower was used in the Philippines as medicine too. Recent studies show that hibiscus flowers have healthful qualities you can benefit from. The Hibiscus Tea is becoming popular as an herbal drink and good for lowering high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol. This type of hibiscus, botanical name Sabdariffa, is also known as Roselle. Good things from this tea is it is rich in Vitamin C and also caffeine free.
I just recently found out about my high blood cholesterol so I am going to try and drink hibiscus tea in my daily regimen of fighting high blood cholesterol. I started by eating oatmeal with flax meal for breakfast and nibbling on “cholesterol spinach” every chance I get direct from the garden. I would rather do that than take any kind of drugs. Hope it works for me.

I have to say I like lighthouses. I collect pictures and figurines of lighthouses all over. I even made a painting of the Diamond Head lighthouse. This picture was taken sometime ago from the Makapuu beach side when we went sightseeing which started from the Hanauma Bay through Bellows AFB. The Makapuu lighthouse reminds me…

  • A Bee in a Flower

Once in a while I go around the garden looking for something to capture with my camera. I happened to stumble on this bee that keeps hovering around the winter-melon vine. It goes from flower to flower sucking the nectar from each flower and pollinating each one in the process. The bee probably don’t even…

  • The American Flag

The American Flag is flying half mast today because today is the day of Remembrance of what happened 10 years ago in New York. It seems only yesterday. I was watching it on TV when it happened and I thought it was just a movie where we are being attacked by Aliens or Terrorists. And…

  • A President’s Home

My last vacation to the Philippines gave me chance to take a lot of pictures. This picture is the house that belongs to our late President Ramon Magsaysay. It is now a historic house in Castillejos, Zambales. As you may observed, the architecture is based on Spanish design. The windows were made of capiz shells,…

I was standing by the sea wall at Hickam and I watched some fishes swimming, yellow tangs mostly and then I saw this lonely crab on top of a big rock. I like to eat crabs so I wish this one is big enough to eat. Wishful thinking!
