New Garden Tool

I can’t imagine gardening without tools especially the good ones that really do the job. I have all kinds from all over. I particularly like the hand tools from Japan and Korea. I studied Bonsai while I was in Okinawa and I tried to have all the tools I needed. I find the mini rake/spade handy for transplanting seedlings to the garden or even in pots. I particularly like the scythe which I always use for weeding and if I need to remove the vines from the garden. It is really a fantastic tool for that because I can do it in a little amount of time. It works just like the sickle and I both like to use them especially in weeding.
The knife I just bought works just like the “hori-hori” knife with one advantage which is a measure engraved on the knife for measuring depths of planting as recommended by experts. It is made of stainless steel and has a leather holder as an added bonus so I can always keep it with me while working in the garden.
It is made by Craftsman and I like it very much. I can use it for digging transplants, weeding, cutting soil bags, etc. It’s a very versatile tool.

  • Caterpillar

I did not think much of it, but when I saw the caterpillars gnawing the leaves of my passionflower plant I was surprised. I have this plant a long time in the garden and I never see any caterpillars before. I didn’t think they would like the tough leaves of the plant. No wonder I…

  • Roast Pig/Lechon

We attended a 50th Wedding Anniversary Party last Saturday at Ewa Beach and the focus of attention is this wonderful, succulent, crunchy roast pig or lechon. Lechon is from the Spanish word “leche” which means milk. Piglets or suckling pigs are normally used for roasting back then. But I have actually seen on Travel Channel…

  • Mangroves

Mangroves are very important in our ecosystem. Their roots are habitats of almost all species of fish and crustaceans. Oysters, barnacles and algae all make mangroves their home. Shrimps and lobsters also stay in the muddy bottoms of the mangrove forests. Mangroves have adapted to their harsh environment like low oxygen, salt intake and water…

  • Society Garlic

Society Garlic is not an edible herb but it is good to have in the garden. It is very ornamental and attracts pollinators. I like to have them in my garden just to enjoy the purple flowers it produces every spring to late summer. It is easy to grow, especially in a xeriscape garden. It…

  • The American Flag

The American Flag is flying half mast today because today is the day of Remembrance of what happened 10 years ago in New York. It seems only yesterday. I was watching it on TV when it happened and I thought it was just a movie where we are being attacked by Aliens or Terrorists. And…
